Pre-Surgery Recommendations

1. Have light meals such as juices, fruits, toasts, soups, etc. Avoid: fat foods, fried, laxative (ie. papaya), fermentable (ie. milk, cheese, and banana). Avoid drinking coffee or other stimulating drinks.


2. Avoid wearing jewelry and make up;

3. Wear comfortable clothes on the day and time of the intervention;

4. Get a good rest at the previous night of the intervention;

5. Avoid alcoholic drinks before and after the intervention;

6. Do not drive on the day of the intervention, neither on the following days;

7. Plan ahead the absence at your workplace according to the type of surgery to be done;

8. Avoid taking medicines based on salicylic acetyl acid for at least 4 days before the intervention, such as: AAS, Aspirin, Melhoral, Aspirina C, Buferin, Coristina D, Doloxene A, Doril, Engov, Sonrisal, Superhist etc;

9. Take the medicines prescribed;

10. Bring the medicines prescribed on the day of the intervention – if required;

11. Clarify all your doubts before surgery. Make sure that you have understood the pre and post recommendations, as well as the list of prescribed medicines.

Post-Surgery Recommendations

1. On the first day, the food must be: liquid meals, icy or cold, non-acid and with no residual pieces.

2. Drink a lot of liquid and get properly feed after the surgery. The meals must be lighter on the first week. Avoid acid foods and give preference for semi-liquid or smooth foods, mixed in the blender and sieved afterwards (for instance: fruit juices, nutritive soups and porridges).

3. Rest until the fourth day after the intervention, not practicing sports or physical exercise whatsoever, no exposure to the sun or heat;

4. Lie down with two pillows on the first days to avoid swelling. Avoid painkillers that contain salicylic acetyl acid on this first recovering stage. Example: AAS, Aspirin, Melhoral, Aspirin C, Buferin, Coristina D, Doloxene A, Doril, Engov, Sonrisal, Superhist e etc.;

5. Remove the bandages only 24 hours after the intervention or according to the doctor’s recommendation;

6. Use cold pads on your face, on the surgery side during the first day;

7. Strictly follow the drugs prescription;

8. In case of pain after the anesthesia effect is gone, take the prescribed painkiller. If the pain continues after 3 hours, contact the responsible professional;

9. Any drug prescribed must be strictly taken on the days and hours recommended;

10. Show up at the clinic for post-surgery control according to the recommendations received;

11. The mouth hygiene can be made by carefully washing it with cold water. Avoid any extra effort or mouth full during the hygiene.

12. Some bleedings might occur, and can be seen in the saliva in the first hours after the intervention. It is normal and it will disappear soon. In case of excessive bleeding or clots, contact the responsible professional immediately. In any case, never wash your mouth to avoid bleedings or even to remove clots.

13. In case of losing stitches, or if there is an open wound, immediately contact the responsible professional.

14. If you see a white-yellowish crust in the wound, it should not be removed; it is just a reaction from your organism.

15. In cases of grafts or barriers: if you see pus or strong odor, immediately contact the responsible professional.

16. Swelling is a normal reaction of any recovering process in the organism, and it may vary in intensity depending on the case. The correct use of medicines, ice bag and bandages usually controls the intensity and duration of the healing process but not necessarily prevents swelling from happening.
