Periodontal diseases reach the majority of the population (75%), and represent the main cause of dental loss. While some may be caused by a particular factor, others might have many factors associated, like smoking, immunosuppressant diseases (ie. diabetes and AIDS), poor oral hygiene, malocclusion or even genetic factors, which make the person more vulnerable to periodontal diseases. Different types of periodontal diseases might have similar clinical occurrence, but the proper identification define the proper treatment.
The main cause of periodontal diseases is the bacteria plaque, a film of sticky material containing saliva, food particles, and bacteria that attaches to the tooth surface both above and below the gum line and are often mistaken for food. When left on the tooth it can promote gum disease and tooth decay.
The first stage of the disease is the gingivitis, recognizable by the reddish appearance, bleeding and gum sore. It is not normal to have a bleeding gum, it indicates there is an infection in the region. If not properly treated, gingivitis might lead to periodontitis, a pathologic situation characterized by the bone loss. In other words, it is the loss of the tooth support, leading to dental movements and losses.
The basic treatment (eliminating the causes of the disease) should be followed by periodontal plastic surgeries to correct occasional sequela. Finally, there should be a strict post-treatment hygiene control to maintain the healthy state achieved.
Periodontal surgery techniques to enhance the gum and improve the dental appearance are intrusive procedures.
The Dr. Veit Dentistry & Health Clinic can help patients who avoid large smiles due the large gum size compared to the teeth. The clinic can model the gum tissue, resulting in a smile that shows more teeth and less gum.
